When visiting my clients office, or helping my friends with their PC issues, 90% of the problem is related to malware or virus issues. My quick fix to their problem is running the following FREE software on the PC and or a quick troubleshooting on the windows system folders.
* Note that you may have to start in safe mode or skip a step depending on what your virus has disabled. Remember that you can kill processes via the task manager. If it is disabled you may be able to bring it up by selecting Start > Run > type in Explorer. Also note that you can use the same process to bring up the internet to install/download helpful programs by typing in iexplore.
Try one or some of these solutions combine to resolve your Malware issues.
Just follow the process:
- |
Run Hijackthis
Hijack this is Trend Micro software. It will filter out several system files and will show possible malware. You can really mess things up with Hijack this if you don't know what you are doing so read up on it!

- | Run CCleaner
CCleaner is generally used to Tune up machines with registry issues or junk files. the registry cleaner can remove minor registry viruses, but will clean up much of the destruction done by malware.
| ||
- | Clear the Prefetch Folder
First:
Go to tools > folder options.
Under the View tab, find the Hidden files and folders section on the list. Check Show hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide Extensions.. and Hide Protected... Click Okay.
The Windows/prefetch folder can get infected and re spawn viruses on startup. Delete EVERYTHING in this folder. Anything important will re-add itself...
| ||
- | Check the System32 Folder.
The Windows/system32 will contain most if not all of your PC's infections, though they will hide.
If you haven't 'un-hid' the folder options above you won't see the infections
In the system32 folder, make sure the view is on Details. Then make sure Date Modified shows the most recent activity.
If you are familiar with System32 you will be able to tell between the good files and the bad files. The bad files generally look like gibberish.
Remember you can always Google the file name and get info on it!
Remove the bad files.
Run a full scan on your antivirus to make sure things are cleared up.
